In 1974, I started Makins Hats on an unemployment check in my one-room, 4th floor walk-up. Using a jiffy steamer, I molded the raw hat bodies over wood blocks. I baked these hats dry in my home oven. Now more than 35 years later, we are in our 3rd New York City factory. We still make all our hats by hand, one at a time, using steam to mold the straw and felt bodies over the wood blocks. We take great pride in making the finest hats available. Makins hats are soft, flexible, easy-to-wear-hats that people feel good in.
Synonymous with Hip. Jazz. Retro. And Modern. You’ve seen Makins hats on the most famous people. Brad Pitt personally requested Makins hats for the 60 page shoot and cover of that July 2007 issue of W magazine that he first shot with Angelina Jolie. Some of the hats Brad Pitt wore in the issue were actually his own Makins hats that he brought to the shoot. Carlos Santana almost always has a Makins hat on whenever you see him. Eddie Murphy wears a sewn leather porkpie, Djimon Hounsou wears a sewn leather fedora. Tiger Woods wears our two-tone yellow and black panama, Snoop Dog wears a lot of our hats, Cedric the Entertainer wore a Makins hat in the Budweiser light commercials airing on TV. And Steve Harvey, Nicholas Cage, Wyclef Jean and Denzel Washington have all worn Makins hats. Madonna owns Makins hats as does Eddie Murphy and Alonzo Mourning. We have lots of pictures in our showroom of Jamie Foxx in our hats.
Makins hats are all made of the finest fur felts, leathers and straws. The award-winning Makins Hats Ltd. has been honored with both the Coty Award “for injecting excitement into a long dormant category” and the Cutty Sark Award as “Best Men’s Accessory Designer”.
